This is Jamie’s Room, a newsletter about My own musings about career, purpose and how I try not to fail at a bunch of things.
I’ve starting reading James Clear's book Atomic Habits and I’m encouraged to begin a writing journey.
So this is it.
If I’m honest this may be the only actual post I make, if I’m committed it may be one of three and if I’m hopeful I may have many more to come.
I’m hopeful.
I’ve recently started a new job, its corporate, and with it comes the required self analysis:
“Am I just doing this for money?”
“Will I ever do something I actually want to do?”
“Can I be good at this and is there a real career here?”
The usual.
I’ve recently read an article about Yoda and the art of not trying.
“Try not! Do, or do not. There is no try.”
In the article Alkjash explains how we must get over our own intention block and stop attempting but actually doing. Using a tool called the Yoda Timer - a simple 5 minute alarm where you place your very real problem and solve it. Not trying to solve but actually solve. This can be incredibly useful for the procrastinators too. In my view its the choice of do or do not that leads me to “try to do". Here, as in this short post, I’m not trying, I’m doing.
I’d like to do better, I’d like to solve my questions, if this is what I want to do then I’ll avoid the try and actually do.
I hope this makes my life easier, if you’re reading this, I hope that the next couple of posts makes your life easier too. If this is the only post, well I hope you can take this is the necessary kick up the pants anyway.
Let do it.
Jamie
